At the DJHB State Park birders are likely to see breeding populations of mangrove cuckoos, white-crowned pigeons, black-whiskered vireos, and migrating warblers. Soon after the purchase, New England seafarers, Bahamians, and Cubans settled on the island. Back then it was then v-e-r-y isolated from the rest of America. It was at the end of a string of small islands extending down from the vast semi-tropical wilderness of the Everglades.
